Having just purchased an expensive desktop at a bargain price from the now defunct Comet Stores, I was keen to experience the feel of Windows 8. I found it virtually unusable, and after finding a way around 'Secure Boot', I installed Linux Mint, and now have a fabulously fast computer with a traditional desk-top. (Linux Mint, by the way, for anyone who has never heard of it, is a non-Windows open source operating system. Anyone had a good experience with Windows 8?
If anyone wants to…Continue
Did anyone see the Winterwatch Big Freeze of '63 on Saturday. I was 11 years old and for the life of me cant remember much about it. I'm sure we had a big snow in the 80's as I do remember shopping for the elderly's in my area and struggling to walk throu drifts, was the warmest winter outside as used so much energy trying to walk. As Dad ans my mother have died I have no family to ask as baby bro…Continue
Having recently spent 18 days in a NHS hospital, I have a few stories to tell. It made me realise just how precious life is, especially for those in good health. In the main, I met some very nice fellow patients, but alas there were some from a certain social class who had no manners, little respect for the nursing staff, and all in all, they were a pain in the a**e.
I found it sad seeing so many elderly patients suffering from dementure, but I was amazed how many managed to maintain…Continue
I have 3 sons and when they were at school I spent endless hours watching them play rugby for the school. At the time I thought it was a really rough game and football seemed so much more civilised. But I soon realised it was a game of great discipline and sportsmanship and I feel in love with it.
16 years on and it is still my favourite sport, even though I still find some of the rules confusing, but lately not sure the refs know the rules either!!
We decided to support a…Continue

I DO APOLOGISE FOR ALL MY TYPE TO BE CAPITALS AND REALISE THAT NORMALLY CAPITALS MEAN YOU ARE SHOUTING OR JUST BEING RUDE BUT UNTIL I GET GLASSES I CANT READ THE SMALL TYPE AND HAVE TO PEER AT THE SCREEN SO I TYPE IN CAPS AND LARGE FONT SO I CAN SEE IF I MAKE MISTAKES. DOESNT ALWAYS WORK AS IM SURE I HAVE MADE MISTAKES BUT JUST TO ASSURE YOU I AM NOT MEANING TO BE RUDE OR SHOUTY JUST BLIND AS A BAT TILL…Continue
Hello everyone and a Happy New Year to you all.
Is it me, or do we naturally become more wary, and possibly, a tad fearful of change, as we get a little older?.
Take this new 'Chat & Socialise' page for example, I'm not sure whether it's a change for the better. I've decided to join up anyway, and I am now attempting my first blog posting. Maybe it's just a matter of familiarity, and once I find my bearings, all will be…Continue
I was having a clear-out the other day, and came across an old list relating to pages from The Radio Times. I don't have those anymore, but it brought to mind the fun we had listening to some of the old radio comedy shows during and just after the war years. I remember these from about four years old, in 1944 and they ran for years after. Although I didn't understand all the 'grown up jokes' they always made a lot of silly noises, which was common to radio broadcasting then.. How about…Continue

A Brief History of the Celebrated 60s Rock Band
Any worried band member earnestly consulting his dog-eared copy of the Birmingham A to Z in the mid 1960s may have noticed a little street called King Edward's Place. It ran from King Edward's Road to Broad Street between the George Hotel and the Tow Rope greasy-spoon cafe. None of these exist any more. The George, then a popular jazz club is now The 80s Bar. An old street sign still bears the name, King…Continue
Father Christmas Boat Run 1993.
The Father Christmas boat run on the Leeds & Liverpool canal was becoming an annual event. It was to take place at the Burnley Road Wharf starting off with Santa stepping off the boat at 1 pm on the dot. The fun day had started at 11 am with several voluntary organisations all doing their specialities. There was a children’s fancy dress, a canine fancy dress, a puppeteer and many other side shows so it was crucial we slotted into out allotted time…Continue
HAS ANYONE DELVED INTO GENEOLOGY? SAD TO SAY I CAME TO IT TOO LATE FOR MY DADDY AND UNCLE, BOTH OF WHOM WOULD HAVE BEEN INTERESTED. I HAVE GONE BACK AS FAR AS 1800 AND DISCOVERED WHY THE WEST COUNTRY ALWAYS FELT LIKE MY SPIRITUAL HOME.. WE ORIGINALLY HAILED FROM DORSET AND MY GGGG GRANDADDY WAS A CHAIR MAKER. THATS THE MATERNAL SIDE OF THE FAMILY OF WHICH I AM A BUT A…Continue
No, it's not a warning regarding a PC Virus. This time, it's one of the old fashioned bugs doctors can't do anything about.
I' m still suffering after a week and wouldn't wish this on anyone. Don't know if it has a "name" but it's a fine start to 2013.
My father used to say, "It's not the cough that carries you off ; it's the coffin they carry you off in!" Not so sure about the first part of that saying at the moment!.
Have YOU been ill? If so, what's your…Continue

What do the regular members think?
Has anyone else been to see the film Quartet yet? It's set in a retirement home for musicians and stars amongst others Maggie Smith, Billy Connolly, Pauline Colllins and Tom Courtney. Would like to know what you though of it if you have.
It seems to be a new idea to make films aimed at older people and the one I really enjoyed was The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel which was both moving and funny as well as being orginal. Quartet had the people round me laughing constantly but I was…Continue
