Retired, Interested in ham radio, electronics in general, computing, classical music including classical rock. Not a good mugshot, but the light was poor, I'll update it soon. Well, I occupy myself with web marketing, and have many other interests, and they are not all technical. There are quite a number of people in my immediate area who know little about computing, and many cannot afford a computer, and even if they did, they would have difficulty paying for broadband, although here, it is not very 'broad'! We are one of the few
areas in the UK not on fiber optic. I am scrounging bits and pieces to make a few computers that are fast enough to cope with current technology, and these will be sold off very cheaply to those who can afford even a modest sum. Yes, I could give them away, but the idea is to provide as many people as possible with equipment, and the small amount I get back in return, helps to pay for more panels and mother boards. Because of the cost of installing legal copies of Windows, I use Linux Mint, which is a fabulous alternative to Windows, and is completely FREE, and in my opinion, a lot better. No-one's complained yet, and this free Open source operating system has interested others who already have an old version of Windows, like Millenium, or Vista. I have other unrelated interests by the way! Perhaps more later.

Copying old record discs

Posted on April 3, 2013 at 14:49 12 Comments

Hi all, I've been busy lately copying old records to MP3.  The software I'm using works like a dream.  So far I've copied around eight double sides and this has only taken up about 700megs, so I reckon that I can easily get the rest on about a 1.5GB total.  All the disks are in good condition, so I'm looking for any one who can find them a good home when I'm ready to part with them (totally free-of-charge of course!) They include some 45rpm singles and some old 78rpm singles.

Windows 8

Having just purchased an expensive desktop at a bargain price from the now defunct Comet Stores, I was keen to experience the feel of Windows 8.  I found it virtually unusable, and after finding a way around 'Secure Boot', I installed Linux Mint, and now have a fabulously fast computer with a traditional desk-top. (Linux Mint, by the way, for anyone who has never heard of it, is a non-Windows open source operating system. Anyone had a good experience with Windows 8?

If anyone wants to…

Who remembers these?

Posted on January 15, 2013 at 9:30 5 Comments

I was having a clear-out the other day, and came across an old list relating to pages from The Radio Times.  I don't have those anymore, but it brought to mind the fun we had listening to some of the old radio comedy shows during and just after the war years.  I remember these from about four years old, in 1944 and they ran for years after. Although I didn't understand all the 'grown up jokes' they always made a lot of silly noises, which was common to radio broadcasting then.. How about…
