I like to chat with my university colleagues because we don't tend to see much of each other in the summer months!
I like to chat to my sister on the phone; we live on opposite sides of the country and are both in ill health, so we don't see each other very often. We set timers when we call each other as we both have phone accounts where we get the first hour free, so we have to remember to phone off and phone back again to keep the costs down!
Apart from chatting to my son, I really enjoy chatting to my husbands customers especially the older folk, they phone because they have roofing problems and we normally end up chatting about all sorts, a lady phoned last week and I was sad to hear I was the first person she'd talked to in days, my hubby fixed Mrs Hill's roof but I was delighted today when she phoned just for a chat bless her! she's having a bit of trouble with her local council and is not sure what to do about it, after a few inquiries I was able to call her back and reasure her all was well. My husband plans to retire early next year and after nearly 40 years of manning the phones I'll miss our customers so much.
Lovely to hear from you all and who you enjoy chatting to. Keep the entries coming in. Jenny
I love to chat to my friends on the phone because they live all round the U.K,and it's so hard to get to meet up,what with work and family life,so it's lovely to chat to them on the phone about their lives and what we have all been up too,it helps keep us all in contact when we can't see each other as often as we would like too
re: 'I Like to Chat' competition
An e-mail chat from old friend Olive makes for a pleasant day,
She always has interesting or amusing things to say.
Discussing genealogy research, or buys from charity shops,
We chat about gardens, flowers, and our tomato plant crops.
Over FIFTY YEARS we, and our communications have grown,
From young wives to great-grannies - the years have flown!
Now e-mails, with photos of latest grand-kids to our families,
Wing back and forth often and so easily, whenever we please.
I take my laptop on holiday, so our e-mail chats never end....
Because I so enjoy hearing from Olive, my dear friend.

A friend and I phone each other every day. We first met in 1940 when, as a ten year old she was brought to my home as a war time evacuee. When I first saw her she wore a grey coat, a beret, carried a gas mask slung over her shoulder and in In her arms a china-headed doll.
I was thrilled to bits that I had a captive friend, one who would not go home at the end of the day but would be with me twenty four hours a day. I was also ten and did not realise what was happening in the world and how Ethel had had to leave her London home and German bombs for a "new life" in rural Wales.
She was with us for five years and we met her parents, her cousins, and even Canadian soldier-relatives. She learnt about birds, and flowers; how to knit and crochet, and sew, and was better at most things than I was. She even learnt basic Welsh and took part in school and Chapel concerts.
We visited the cinema together, and often tap-danced the mile home in the black out, if we had seen an Eleanor Powell, or Fred Astaire film.
When she finally went home we missed each other very much. An only child she had thought of me as her "sister". Although I had a beloved sister she was twelve years older than I was and Ethel had been my "twin".
We have kept in touch over the years, rejoicing in happy occasions and sharing in united grief. The telephone has been our life-line.
Now we are both old and a daily phone call is the "umbilical cord" that still links us. We talk for twenty minutes or so, often reminiscing about the old days .Without our phones we would be lost ; with them, we re-live the happy days of our youth.
It is lovely to hear of life-long friendships that have stood the test of time. These days so many friendships and relationships can be very transient and superficial, and genuine friends are a blessing.
Best wishes, from Margaret (teragram)
Thank you, Margaret.
