I like Tesco plain chocolate. It's not too sweet, but lovely and chocolatey.

This is really so sad to admit to you chocolate lovers, but i really like Nestles Caramac, I've not seen it in the shop for years, last night my family and I went out to a restaurant to celebrate my husbands birthday, and after the meal the usual chocolates came up with the coffee, and I metioned to my son's partner Polly, that I like Caramac, but had not seen it in the shops or years, Polly informed me that Nestle still make it but the packaging has changed. Polly excused herself from the table saying she needed the bathroom, but had popped to the nearby shop and bought me two bars of Caramac, how "sweet" was that?  Bless her!

One Easter, years ago, my mum-law-law bought the children these huge chocolate Easter bunnies they must have been 2ft tall, the children were only little so we thought thats enough chocolate for them, so we didn't bother to buy them eggs ourselves. I hid the bunnies in the back of a kitchen cupboard and when I went to get them out on Easter Sunday morning they'd been badly nibbled by a mouse. Hubby rushed out to try and get the children an egg, but what shops were open had sold out. We had two little sad faces when we told them about the bunnies but they soon cheered up with a promise of a toy after Easter. Hubby got a trap that catches the mice alive (big softie) with bait of chocolate bunny we soon caught the mouse and hubby set it free on a near by common.

Crafter and other Caramackers.

For those who may have difficulty in finding your treat it may be helpful to know that McVities make a biscuit bar covered in a layer very similar to Caramac.  It is called Gold Bar and is available in most supermarkets. Why not give it a whizz?

I was thinking about the Chocolates and sweets I had when I was a kid and especially how they were sold. At the end of our row of houses was a sweet shop that was run by an elderly lady, she use to sit in an old wooden chair behind the counter, wearing the same old filthy apron she'd had for years, her finger nails were dirty and stained thick with nicotine stains. You'd often go in the shop and find her fast asleep in her chair, coughing or banging on the counter was useless as she was as deaf as a post, you'd either have to wait until she woke up or go back to the shop later. Most of the sweets in the shop were sold loose and I can remember wanting to laugh as she scooped out my 2oz of sherbet and only managed to put half of it in the paper bag as her dirty old hands shook so much, you wouldn't dare say anything when she charged you for the 2oz, she would then proceed to take out her old hanky to wipe up the sherbet spillage. We had a lady in the next street that would sell the kids sweets from her door way, we had no idea where they came from or how old they were. Another local shop sold ice lollies made from orange squash with a bit of tinned fruit in the bottom, the owner use to make them in old cracked tea cups with a rough bit of stick poked in for a lolly stick. Can you imagine what health and safety would do today!

You've bought lots of memories flooding back of old sweet shops. I bet that rather 'shaky' sherbet tasted good.

I used to like getting bags of pear drops and cough candies. And Traffic Light Lollipops were really good too.

My husband used to love 'shrimps' those pink gummy sweets.

There are still a few 'retro' sweetshops around - I think they're making a comeback.

But I'm sure the health and safety is much stronger than it used to be!
